Refractive Laser Surgery For Myopia

Myopia is also short sightedness and that means a person with this condition cannot see objects that are closer to their eye very clearly. It often affects people who are above the age of forty. However, even children and people from other age groups can develop this condition.

Fortunately, there have been several advancements in vision technology and today there are different kinds of surgeries that help different vision problems. A few decades ago wearing spectacles was the only way to treat a condition like myopia, but later contact lenses came along and the type of contact lens got better with technology. Now there are some surgeries that help to cure the problem of myopia or bring down the points so that the person need not wear spectacles in their life time. LASIK is one of the kinds of surgery that helps myopia. However, like any other surgery even this surgery has its advantages and disadvantages.

Myopia is basically a set of refractive errors in the eye and a refractive surgery such as LASIK attempts at correcting these errors. The same surgeries are also used to correct far sightedness. The techniques used may be slightly different and today there are more than five types of surgeries available for vision correction. However, a person should know that this type of surgery can be conducted only once and there is no guarantee that it can be a permanent cure. The vision problem may develop again but at that time the person cannot opt for a surgery again. The retina can be operated only once.
