According to historical records it was Ernest William Goodpasture, an American pathologist, who made the discovery of mumps in the year 1934. The common symptom of mumps is the salivary glands get swollen and are extremely painful. The symptoms are usually not very severe in kids, but it can cause infertility in teenage males and men.
Vaccine has been introduced to eradicate this painful disease, but still people in third world countries are being afflicted by it.
The symptoms of mumps are easy to recognize because the signs can be seen physically very clearly. The common symptoms of this disease are fever and headache. Patient will also experience inflammation in the testicles, or orchitis. About sixty percent of the patients suffering from mumps will also have parotid inflammation or parotitis. The symptoms in addition to the common symptoms are sore face, dry mouth and loss of voice.

Physical examinations can help you recognize the glands which are swollen. Sometimes, doctors may use the saliva or blood to test the patient. They can also use the results of the polymerase chain reaction technology.
In general, it is known as contagious disease, and it can be transmitted from one infected person to an uninfected person. This disease can also be spread by kissing, food sharing and sharing drinks. There is no proper treatment for this painful disease. The pain can be relieved through the application of ice or heat to the neck.
