Mumps is an illness which is caused by a virus and it causes the swelling of the parotid glands. The complications that mumps causes include meningitis and pancreatitis. Meningitis is the inflammation of the membranes surrounding brain, while pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, which has a permanent and lasting effect on the pancreas.
The virus causing mumps enters into the body via throat and nose. The symptoms start to appear as the virus starts developing and spreading to the membranes and the brain and then to the glands, testicles, ovaries, pancreas.
The symptoms, which show up, will stay for ten days and the symptoms are as follows:
The salivary glands pain and swell. One of the cheeks or both swell. It is believed that the classical symptom is the swelling of the parotid gland, but this also happens in other cases. The patient also experiences fever, which can be between 101 degrees Fahrenheit and 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Earache, sore throat, headache and the mouth starts paining when eating something. Having sour foods and liquids like citrus juice or fruit can cause pain. Patient feels tired and the joints and muscles start aching. Loss of appetite and vomiting are also common.
Almost one third of the infected people do not notice any symptoms. This can be seen in majority of kids less than 2 years of age. The people with this infection transmit it to others in one to two days, and after that the symptoms show up in five to nine days. The period of incubation starts when the person is infected till the virus develops in sixteen to eighteen days. Consult your doctor as soon as possible.
