The symptoms and the process of transmission of mumps are similar in pregnant and non pregnant women. Also, pregnancy does not show any additional effect on mumps. Mumps is a disease which is contagious, and caused by a virus. It causes swelling of the salivary glands and fever.
Pregnant women can be attacked with mumps same as the women who are not pregnant. Mumps is not as contagious as chickenpox and measles, and does not have as severe affect on the fetus as rubella.
Mumps virus is the cause for mumps, and this disease is prevalent all over the world. It infects only the human beings. Based on the current trends, incidences of mumps are more in adults, with forty percent of adults getting infected with mumps causing virus.
The mucus in the throat and nose has the mumps virus in a person who is infected and also the saliva contains this deadly virus. It gets transmitted when the person with the mumps infection coughs or sneezes releases airborne droplets into air. These droplets in the air enter the throat and nose of the pregnant woman causing the infection. Also, if the pregnant woman touches surfaces touched by an infected person, she is at a risk of getting the disease.
It has been seen that every one to ten pregnancies out of 10,000 are afflicted by mumps. The best way to prevent mumps during pregnancy is to wash hands frequently with medicated soap and warm water and avoid all contact with an infected person.
