Viral Meningitis Symptoms

Meningitis is one of the infectious diseases, which affects the brain. The membranes inflame due to infections, accidents, medical procedures and chemicals. Meningitis is both bacterial and viral.

Viral meningitis is common and is a mild illness when compared to bacterial meningitis. Some doctors term viral meningitis as aseptic meningitis because it does not develop in the spinal fluid. They call it so because they are not aware about the cause that caused meningitis.

Viral meningitis is transmitted when a person comes into contact with infected nose secretions, feces and also throat secretions. It is transmitted quickly among children. It affects children during early autumn and summer. Anyone is at risk of getting viral meningitis, but people above 40 years are usually immune.

Commonly, viral meningitis begins suddenly. The symptoms in the babies develop slowly. They start refusing food; they sleep a lot, more than the usual; and are always fussy. Babies who are not more than 18 months may experience rigid or tender back and they become extremely fussy cannot be consoled. Most of the cases will not have bulging fontanelle, but it does occur in the later stages of the disease.

Some children will experience rash which covers almost all the parts of the body or legs and arms. The rash is flat and red, but in some parts of the body, the rash can be raised. Conjunctivitis and sore throat can also develop if the person is suffering from enterovirus meningitis.

Adults and majority of children recover within ten to fourteen days. For some, the illness may extend for longer period of time.
