Meningitis is a kind of disease where the membranes surrounding the spinal cord and brain get inflamed. This disease is caused due to either a virus or bacterium. Meningitis is a communicable infection, so you need to take precautions like covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough.
The symptoms of meningitis are severe headaches and high grade fever. You may also experience vomiting and drowsiness. So, immediately see a doctor if you have any of these symptoms.
Meningitis due to bacteria can be cured using antibiotics. The antibiotics given by the doctor will fight against the invading bacteria. You may also be put on analgesics to help with the headaches and fever. The doctor may also ask you to change your food habits. You will be asked to consume more fluids to hydrate your body, and eat food that will increase your energy levels. The treatment should be started immediately after you are infected. And, if it is not treated, meningitis causes many other health complications.
If meningitis is caused due to virus, antibiotics cannot be used to cure it. Bed rest is the best option to get cured from viral meningitis. Use the over the counter medicines to fight the body aches and fever. Drink lots of water and eat small amount of food to have some strength and to avoid stomach upsets. Meningitis results in loss of appetite, so you have to eat even if you are not feeling hungry. Sometimes antiviral medications can be prescribed to fight against the infection. Vaccines are also available to be used to avoid meningitis.
