Malaria is a disease that is caused by the female species of the mosquito and one it is actually a dangerous infection. People who are visiting Costa Rica should be wary about this disease and they should take sufficient precautions to avoid this disease. There are few ways of preventing malaria if you intend traveling to Costa Rica in the near future.
Some of the prevention methods include taking anti malarial drugs, wearing sensible clothes that cover your arms and legs, using a mosquito repellant and using bed nets and sleeping in air conditioned rooms.
Costa Rica despite of being a major tourism zone has several areas that are prone to mosquitoes, especially Limon Province and Puerto Limon which are rich with greenery. It is very important as a traveler to go with complete information as to which part of Costa Rica you are traveling to. Malaria preventions actually vary according to the country that you are going to. It is best if you talk to a medical practitioner on the vaccinations required before you leave. There are some regions in Costa Rica which have a low prevalence of malaria and some are very high. Anti malarial drugs like Primaquine are used if you are visiting places such as Costa Rica. There are several others like chloroquine, atovaquone and doxycycline that are used for the prevention.
Malaria can be a fatal; disease and causes several other illnesses. When an infected mosquito bites a human, it takes 14 days for the malaria parasite to incubate. This parasite after 14 days starts spreading to various parts of the body through the blood stream. Some of the symptoms of malaria are high fever, chills at day time and sweating at night times. The fever follows a cyclical pattern where it increases by the day and comes down in the night. The patient will also suffer from excessive headaches and nausea.
One way to prevent getting malaria is to ensure that you do not get bitten by mosquitoes. Using repellants in the form of creams and sprays can be helpful. Use insect repellant like DEET which have 30 percent to 50 percent of the repellants. Dressing sensibly in such areas is an important aspect. You should wear long sleeved and fully covered pants while visiting such places. Also, wear socks and shoes.
While sleeping you should use bed nets and also mosquito repellants which can be plugged in. also spraying rooms with mosquito repellants help in such situations. Always purchase the anti-malarial medications before you travel to such places in the world.
