Malaria is actually a disease of the blood that is caused by mosquitoes which carry the malaria-causing parasite. When the mosquito bites the person and transfers the parasite into the human body, it attacks the blood and results in severe chills and fever. Sometimes it might result in jaundice or severe anemia.
Malaria is a very common disease in the entire world. Wherever there are mosquitoes, the chances of getting malaria are present. It is a more common disease in tropical and sub tropical climates. There is no vaccine for malaria however one can take some anti malarial or preventive measures like using creams to avoid a mosquito bite.
The malarial parasite is carried by a female mosquito called the anopheles. The parasite carried by this mosquito is called the plasmodium. It is a very common parasite found in tropical countries of South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. The incubation period for the malarial parasite in the blood stream is about six to nine days. These parasites travel to the person’s liver from the blood stream. They also take over the red blood cells. When they grow to the adult stage, they start multiplying in the blood. They lay eggs in the red blood cells causing them to burst, and thereby spreading to various parts of the body. The parasites keep attacking the red blood cells and that is why it leads to anemia very quickly. However, due to the severe symptoms, malaria can be diagnosed very easily through common blood tests.
