Lyme disease in humans is caused by ticks found on deer. These ticks are infected by bacteria that cause the disease, and when the tick bites a human being, the bacteria enter the body and the disease is caused.

The bacterium that causes Lyme disease is known as Borrelia burgdorferi. This type of bacteria is found in smaller animals. The ticks, sometimes, pick up these bacteria and when they bite humans, they pass it on to the blood stream. The bacteria multiply very rapidly in the human body. Lyme disease is not contagious and does not spread from one person to another. It only spreads when the tick bites. Also, a rash is caused at the site of the tick bite. This rash will expand as the disease progresses.

It takes about 24 hours after tick bite for the complications of the disease to show up. The person may start feeling very tired, and also will have muscle pain. Slowly the muscle pain progresses to headaches and joint aches and then are accompanied with high fever. If you find one particular rash in the body that looks like a bull's eye, then you should suspect Lyme disease and rush to the doctor.

If Lyme disease has not been treated properly, there could be several complications in the future. It causes arthritis, it could lead to irregularities in thee hart beat or meningitis and it can even cause paralysis. That is why proper treatment of the disease is a must.
