Leprosy is caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which multiplies in the body once infected. Leprosy has been plaguing human beings for several years now. The signs of leprosy start occurring only after two to three years of infection. It is known as the leprosy incubation period. The three years time is taken from the period of infection to the development of symptoms. It can also extend to more than three years.
It is a very slowly progressing disease. When a leprosy bacterium attacks the body it affects the skin and the peripheral nerves. The symptoms of leprosy vary in different people.
The mildest form of the disease is known as tubercloid leprosy, and one of the earliest signs of the disease is red patches appearing on the trunk. Also, loss of sensation in that area is common. The area of the rash does not feel anything. Some other symptoms include stiffness and dryness in the skin. In severe cases, it causes loss of fingers and toes. It also causes problems in vision and in some cases loss of vision. There may be severe pain in the body. The person, infected with these bacteria, feels the weakness in muscles, hands and feet. The nerves near the elbow and the knees are enlarged.
However, not everyone infected with leprosy loses their fingers and/or toes. If the condition has been diagnosed early, the treatment for it is possible. Sometimes with mild leprosy, even self healing is possible. People who have been infected should avoid getting injured.
