Lactose intolerance disorder was first discovered in the 1960s. People often confuse lactose intolerance symptoms with gastric disorders because the symptoms of both are almost similar.
Lactose intolerance cases are quite common in any individual in different degrees. Some people can digest lactose completely; some can take 1 to 2 glass of milk each day; while others cannot even do that. Depending on the degree, the lactose intake can be varied. The moment someone shows symptoms of lactose intolerance, he or she should avoid consumption of milk and other dairy products.
Lactose is a type of sugar, and inability to digest this sugar results in lactose intolerance. This inability could be because of lack of an enzyme lactase, which is responsible for breaking the lactose into galactase and glucose.
Few predominant lactose intolerance symptoms are pain in the abdomen, feeling bloated after consumption of milk, flatulence, acidity, nausea, and in extreme cases diarrhea. These symptoms vary as per the toleration level of a person.
There could be two instances of lactose intolerance. In case of a primary instance, there is a deficiency of an enzyme called lactase, which is responsible for the digestion of milk and other dairy products. This deficiency is some what related to genes, and is often found in adults. In children these signs become more significant after they reach adolescence.
In the secondary instance, the lactose intolerance occur because of some previous severe gastric disorder or diarrhea or illness that could have caused some damage in the small intestine resulting in less secretion of enzyme lactase. This type of lactose intolerance is found to be more in infancy, which gradually fades when the infant grows older.
