Lactose Intolerance In Toddlers

Lactose intolerant children can find some relief by staying away from milk and other dairy products. In some cases, there could be lactase deficiency in changeable measures. Such children can tolerate lactose in varying measures. Parents of lactose intolerant children should understand that avoiding milk does control symptoms and give relief, but less absorption of lactose can lead to insufficient calcium leading to underdeveloped bones.

For children below 2 years lactose free calcium fortified milk is available. One can consume that to get adequate amount of calcium.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has noted and suggested that infants who are lactose intolerant can continue with human breast feed as it does not cause much harm to them. It is also noticed that small quantity of lactose, approximately four to eight ounces in entire day, if had along with other types of foods does not show any predominant symptoms of lactose intolerance.

Many lactose intolerant infants can digest chocolate milk and plain yoghurt. Yoghurt is recommended because the bacterium in yoghurt helps to breakdown lactose into its two byproducts -- galactose and glucose -- to some extent. It is also said that the semi solid state of yoghurt helps in reducing flatulence and indigestion because it helps in delaying gastric clearing and gastro intestinal movements, and thereby giving less symptoms of lactose intolerance.

It is very important for parents to carefully check the nutrient contents mentioned in the formulated lactose free milk before giving to toddlers. One must take care that the formula has sufficient supplements of calcium and Vitamin D which are essential for bone mineralization and development.
