Kidney Failure And Nerve Damage

The failure of kidney has a detrimental effect on the working of many other organ systems of the human body. The nervous system is also included in suffering the repercussions of kidney failure. Uremic neuropathy is a variant of peripheral neuropathy, which is known to attack approximately 20 to 50 percent of victims of kidney failure.

This disease is caused by the presence of uremic toxins that build up in the body due to the lack of proper kidney functioning. Until the decade of the 1960s, not much was known about the inter-relationship between chronic renal failure and polyneuropathy. Studies in this respect highlight that incidence of neuropathy is evident in patients with the creatinine levels below 5 mL/min, or the glomerular filtration rate below 20 mL/min.

Some of the symptoms of uremic neuropathy include pain, numbness, and tingling sensation in all limbs, sensation of being pricked in all the limbs, cramps, twitching of the muscles, increased feeling of pain in all the limbs, weakness in the muscles, reduced sensation , pruritus, weakness, atrophy and restless leg syndrome.

As the disease grows in stage, the symptoms experienced in the feet and legs extend to the arms. In course of time, the weakness in the limbs results in imbalance, numbness and retarded reflexes. Some relief from symptoms of crawling, prickling and itching sensations in the legs can be obtained by movement of the concerned limb.

The diagnosis of the nerve damage condition is conducted through certain tests such as neurological examination, electromyography, nerve conduction velocity test and blood tests. Since the two conditions are linked, treatment of uremic neuropathy is the same as that of renal failure that is dialysis or kidney transplantation. For uremic neuropathy specifically, certain preventive steps can be taken to prevent the loss of sensation.
