Alcoholism And Jaundice

In the normal functioning of the human body, the blood produces hemoglobin. The spleen is responsible for the break down of dead hemoglobin resulting in the release of bilirubin as a by-product of the process. From the spleen, bilirubin travels to the liver, wherein it is absorbed by the bile and removed from the body through feces.

Jaundice is caused in circumstances wherein the body is unable to excrete the bilirubin from the body. This medical condition can be identified with symptoms of yellow coloration of the skin and eyes and excretion of dark yellow urine.

Alcoholism is one of the worst forms of addiction. Alcoholism or addiction to alcohol harms the body in more than one way. It not only affects the physical condition of the body but impairs one’s power of reasonable thinking and human psychology. One of the well known repercussions of alcoholism is the occurrence of jaundice. At some stage or the other, most alcoholics are definitely affected by this problem.

One of the primary reasons of the body's inability to excrete bilirubin is the destruction of a high quantity of red blood cells in the blood owing to a liver infection or any other related disorder of the organ. Intake of high levels of alcohol certainly hampers the normal functioning of the liver and under extreme circumstances results in failure of the organ altogether.

Studies project alcoholism to be one of the chief causes of jaundice. If the situation is caught early and preventive measures are taken in the form of abstinence from alcohol, then the failure of liver functioning can be controlled to a certain extent. However, in absence of such precautionary measures, the disease can prove to be terminal. Damage to the liver leads to the condition of liver cirrhosis that has high rate of fatality. In fact, statistics reveal that the death of most alcoholics occurs due to liver cirrhosis, which is difficult to treat if not diagnosed at the right time.
