Pain Relief For Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can be categorized as a disorder and not as a disease. It causes discomfort in the abdomens and irregular movements in the bowel. The pain caused due to IBS can be comforted through various modes of treatment, which differs from person to person and their symptoms.

The modes of treatment can include dietary modifications, antispasmodics, anti-diarrheals, taking in more fiber and/or laxatives, and consuming probiotics. Since IBS and stress have a direct link, some people are also advised for antidepressants and therapy against stress for relieving from pain.

Diet Modifications – As per the American Journal of Gastroenterology, about 60 percent of the patients suffering from IBS can have their condition improved with diet modifications. Allergy or intolerances to certain kind of food stuff can result in symptomatic responses. Making notes of food taken and the symptoms observed can help the patient in identifying the food that troubles their bowels.

Antispasmodics – Some of the antispasmodics that can help ease up the pain in some of the patients suffering from IBS are peppermint oil, chamomile and hyoscine. Antispasmodics act against the work of spastic colons that are primarily responsible for IBS. But, clinical studies prove that antispasmodics work only temporarily in providing relief from the pain. However, the required dosage and its frequency of intake differ with every person and have not been up for detailed study.

Fiber and Laxatives – They are mostly suggested for IBS patients with constipation as a predominant symptom. Fiber facilitate in the easy passage of stool from the body. Clinical studies show polyethylene glycol helps in the frequent passage of stools, but without decreasing the pain. However, patients of IBS have found that pains associated with bloating can be comforted by the easy passage of stools.
