Iritis is a kind of anterior uveitis, and a term used for the inflammatory disorder of the colored region of the eye which is known as the iris. There is no precise reason behind its occurrence in numerous cases. Sometimes, iritis becomes just another symptom in the course of a disease that attacks some other organ in the body. They are known as connective tissue disorders which may include rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, sarcoid, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis, Behcelt’s disease, Chrohn’s disease, Reiter’s disease, B-27 disease.
It is essential to determine if the iritis affecting a person is symptom of one of the above mentioned disorders. The doctor treating the patient suffering from iritis can ask for a medical history of the patient and for a few tests which might include blood test, an X-ray of the chest and lower back, and a test on the skin for detecting tuberculosis.
The treatment of iritis is aimed at finding out the root cause of the inflammation and then removing it. Eye drops containing steroids and some suitable ointments are the key points of the treatment. They help in controlling the inflammation. Along with it, the eyes are also administered with some drops that help in dilating the pupil, which reduce the risk of any scars that may affect the eyes and add comfort to the eyes. Hot packs also help in relieving the symptoms of iritis. In extreme cases, injections and oral medications may be administered.
