What Causes Heart Disease ?

Heart disease is the most common type of disease causing death in people. It is the biggest killer in the United States.

The most common types of heart diseases are high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, ischemic strokes, heart attack, cardiac arrest, tachycardia, rheumatoid heart disease and the common hypertension. Factors like stress, lifestyle, and diet contribute to the causes of getting heart disease.

The major risk factors for heart disease are high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight, smoking and alcoholism. Physical inactivity, gender and heredity are also factors that cause heart disease. Some of the contributing factors include stress, hormones, birth control pills and alcohol.

Obesity can directly lead to heart strokes at a young age. Overweight people have higher cholesterol levels, and this can cause the arteries to get blocked. This, in turn, affects the way the heart functions and pumps the blood. The heart is a muscle that needs a constant supply of blood and oxygen. High cholesterol causes blocks in arteries and leads to stroke. Whereas high blood pressure makes the heart beat faster and work harder because of the pressure that is being applied to the walls of the arteries.

Smoking plays a role by contracting the arteries and decreasing blood flow. This is more dangerous because it alters the size of the arteries. Over a period of time, it can lead to a severe form of stroke.

Heredity is a very minor factor and chances are high if your parents suffered from heart attack. However, by following a healthy lifestyle, the risk of developing heart disease can be brought down.
