Pulmonary hypertension is caused by the blockage of blood vessels in lungs connecting to the heart. Pulmonary hypertension is an unusual disorder of lungs that arises due to the obstruction of blood flowing in the lungs through arteries increasing the blood pressure and leading to heart failure.
The blood pressure in the lungs cannot be measured the way we can measure the blood pressure of the body. This increased blood pressure leads to increased working of the heart. Pulmonary hypertension can occur in without having any other heart or lung disease.
The oxygen less blood is provided to the lungs form the heart's right ventricle (chamber in heart). When the blood reaches the lungs, it fetches oxygen and supplies it back to the left ventricle. Then from here the blood is supplied to whole body through aorta. The pressure in the pulmonary artery is found to be fourteen mmHg in normal conditions, but in case of pulmonary hypertension patients the pressure increases to twenty five mmHg in normal conditions and thirty mmHg during work outs.
In pulmonary hypertension, lungs' blood vessels behave unusually, especially the ones that are small. The blood vessels get blocked and offer resistance to the free flow of blood in the lungs. The offered resistance increases the work of heart; the right ventricle has to perform more work than normal against the resistance offered by the lungs, and the blood supplied from the heart through the lungs has to supply sufficient blood for proper functioning of the body. This increased work causes the heart to strain which, in turn, could lead to heart failure.
Pulmonary hypertension is categorized into two type’s mainly, primary and secondary pulmonary hypertension. The root cause of primary is not identified but it is considered to be inherited. It is found that the primary pulmonary hypertension is more in women than men. The secondary pulmonary hypertension is caused due to the regular use of diet drugs and illegal drugs like cocaine, heroin and others. The other causes of this could be HIV, cardio vascular diseases and liver infections.
