Life Expectancy Pulmonary Hypertension

The increase in the blood pressure pertaining to the arteries in the lungs and the right heart are said to cause pulmonary hypertension. The exact cause for pulmonary hypertension is not recognized till now, but various aspects influence life expectancy. In this health condition, the blood vessels in the lungs and heart tighten and obstruct the flow of blood. This increases the blood pressure in arteries and veins. This can lead to heart failure sometimes if proper treatment is not taken.

The condition becomes worse and sometimes gets out of control that cannot be cured with proper medications. Though treatments can ease the symptoms, incurable problems can arise such as irregular heartbeats, blood clots, heart failure and internal bleeding. Early diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension can reduce the risk of fatal attacks by this disease on the body. The prospects for pulmonary hypertension are sometimes affected by improper treatments. The effect on prognosis can be affected by other factors like diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension after the age of forty five and no response to treatments and medications.

People affected by the pulmonary hypertension should undergo proper treatment because untreated people have a lifespan of not more than 3 years. However, the advanced treatments available today extend the life of patients suffering from this disease to more than ten years and even in patients who have experienced heart failure in the right heart. Several treatments are available to cure pulmonary hypertension and the best treatment that a patient can undergo is physical exercises under medical supervision. The condition though requires extreme care and proper treatments with proper medications.

New researches like the calcium channel blockers help in extending the life of patients by about twenty percent. A pulmonary hypertension patient can survive long or can have very short duration of life. No doctor can give assurance or predict the life span of a patient suffering from pulmonary hypertension.
