How Do People With Pulmonary Hypertension Die ?

Pulmonary hypertension is caused due to the increase in blood pressure in veins and arteries that supply blood to the lungs. There is no such technique available to monitor the blood pressure in lungs as we have equipments that calculate blood pressure.

The blood vessels present in lungs affected by the increased blood pressure have adverse effects on the heart and lungs leading to several disorders. The blood vessels connecting the lungs and heart get tighten increasing the blood pressure in pulmonary arteries (joining the lungs and heart), which could become fatal for the patient’s life. These tightened blood vessels become rigid and obstruct the free flow of blood from lungs to heart.

Most of the people are unaware of the symptoms of pulmonary hypertension. Respiratory problems, fatigue, prolonged chest pain and dizziness are some of the common symptoms. The majority of people after being diagnosed with this health condition die within 3 years after identification of this disorder though few treatments and medicines increase the life for some time. New treatments and medicines available today allow patients to live for more than 10 years after pulmonary hypertension is diagnosed.

Pulmonary hypertension is categorized in to 2 types, primary and secondary pulmonary hypertension. The cause behind the primary is not specific but the secondary has some specific reasons. The primary pulmonary hypertension is frequently related to using diet drugs, genetically transferred from parents, or use of illegal drugs. Majority of people suffering from pulmonary hypertension die with heart failure. Pulmonary hypertension is found very rarely in people; around 2 persons in millions suffer from this disease. This disease attacks in late ages and sometimes could lead to death of the person. Proper treatment and medication with some physical exercise can increase the life span. Pulmonary hypertension can cause heart attacks and if the patient is unable to tolerate it may lead to paralysis or complete heart failure.
