The humanpapillomavirus, also known as HPV, is one of the most common types of viruses to be found. It affects millions of people in the United States every year. It is a sexually transmitted disease, and most of the times it does not cause any serious infections.

However, it directly acts on the immune system and exposes the infected person to the risks of getting various types of cancer like cervical cancer in women, genital warts, cancer of the vagina, and in men penile and anal cancer.

There is no way to tell if a man has HPV or not because the virus is invisible and does not cause any clear symptoms or signs until it goes to an advanced stage.

In women, the HPV can be identified through a pap smear. Even this is possible only if the virus is active. It causes abnormal cell activity and through which the virus can be identified. If a woman goes through annual pap smear tests regularly, then the presence of HPV virus can be easily identified.

There are more than 100 strains of the HPV virus and among them only 40 are known to us. Among the forty at least 15 of them are known to cause cancer. Some types of virus cause the genital warts. In men, the presence of genital warts confirms the presence of HPV virus. However, the virus takes several months or even years to cause the first sign of genital warts. And also, the warts grow very slowly, and it may take years for the wart to show up.
