Spider bites are common in the months of summer. However, it is not a life threatening situation when a person has a spider bite. For normal people, a spider bite is merely a sting and rarely does it get serious. However, if people have certain allergic reactions to spider bites, then they should be alert to the symptoms of allergies. An allergic reaction can be mild or severe depending on the type of insect bite.
A spider bite causes a sting and some pain. Soon there will be redness and a swelling at the place of the bite. Hives which are red bumps may appear on the skin. Hives are not the only symptoms and seldom do they occur on their own. If hives are spreading throughout the body, then watch for some other associated symptoms as well.
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that causes a person’s throat to swell and also causes difficulty in breathing. Even the lips and the tongue may swell and it causes an itchy feeling near the throat and lips. Some of the other symptoms are a cough, wheezing, and breathlessness. If a person is showing such symptoms, they should be given a shot of epinephrine immediately. If treatment is delayed, the person may go into shock and die.
The kinds of spiders that cause severe reactions are brown recluse, black widow and hobo spider. The brown recluse spider punctures the skin when it bites. The puncture will show and it will cause a red bump. The bump will be soft at the center and tender at the edges. The body as a response forms a blister at the site of the bite. There could be severe itching and if the body reacts to the venom induced by the spider, it will show severe symptoms like a fever, nausea, and purplish red spots all over the body.
The black widow spider bite produces the most common allergic reactions like nausea and dizziness. The bite will show two spots caused by the fangs of the spider. Muscle spasms, vomiting and stomach cramps can follow after 30 minutes of the bite.
The hobo spider bite is difficult to identify because the symptoms develop after a day. There will be redness of the skin and numbing and tingling sensation follows. There will be itching at the spot of the bite and no other symptoms initially. If there is a headache and muscle numbness present, you should seek medical help immediately.
