Herpes is mainly caused by the HSV virus. This virus is the main reason for genital herpes, oral herpes and eye herpes. In order to test for herpes the lab technicians would look for the presence of HSV virus in the sore. The virus typically lives for a short period of time on the skin and starts replicating it.
The main method used to diagnose herpes is herpes culture. Herpes Simplex Virus DNA testing is also used to identify the virus. If the infection is acute, then more complicated procedures like antibody testing is used. A sample culture is taken and seen under the microscope. If the number of HSV virus seems to be increasing by the hour, then the presence of herpes infection is confirmed.
Tests are mostly conducted when the person has genital herpes because of the repercussions of the disease. A sample culture from the area of the rash is taken and examined under the microscope for the virus. The HSV virus does not get into the blood stream. Instead, it stays on the surface or just under the surface of the skin. That is why the skin is taken for examination and no blood test is taken. Blood tests may be taken to rule out other infections like urinary tract infection. The test result will show if the HSV virus is active or not. The presence of HSV antibodies also indicates an active HSV virus sometimes.
Newborns are at utmost danger of herpes if the pregnant mother has it. It can become life threatening for them.
