Herpes is actually a sexually transmitted disease. It is caused by a virus and can create a range of illnesses to the person. There are several kinds of herpes as there are many variations of the virus. However, the most common kind of herpes is genital herpes. It causes infections and sores in the genital area of men and women. It can also cause oral infections and cold sores on the lips above and near the mouth. One cannot get herpes through the mouth, but they can get infection of the mouth due to herpes.
The symptoms of herpes are different in different people. In genital herpes, the symptoms can be varied like sores in the genital area, a burning sense while urinating because the urethra can be infected. In women, urinary infections leading to back pain and also headaches is also seen.
Usually herpes starts with a rash and then the rash becomes sore and gets crusty and dries out. The whole course could take about two to three weeks. When the herpes infection begins some people develop an infection and fever and some do not. Herpes usually affects people with low level of immunity. However, if a person has cold sores on the mouth and also itchiness and pain in the genital area, they should immediately get medical help for the condition. Otherwise it will continue to progress to all parts of the body and also lead top several other conditions like infection of the urinary tract and so on.
