Babies With Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a concerning disease involving infection and subsequent damage of the human liver by the hepatitis B virus. There are several causes and means of transmission of this disease in adults. Most of these modes of transmission and also the causes are directly related to the habits of the adults. However, a newborn baby can also acquire this disease for no fault of his own.

He gets it only if his mother gets infected at the time of her pregnancy or just before her pregnancy. If she conceives her baby while carrying the B type virus, the baby can automatically get affected by it.

To avoid this situation, any woman wanting to conceive should take the necessary precautions before getting pregnant. Hepatitis B is highly contagious, so the woman should make sure that she is not in the closeness of any infected person just before her pregnancy. Also, she should ensure that her sexual partner is free of the virus before planning to get pregnant with him. Contact with any infected person or food or water should also be avoided at all cost during the pregnancy period.

However, a protection can be still given to the baby born out of an infected mother in the form of two shots of injections right after birth and two more, six months hence. These shots can ensure 95 percent chances of preventing the spreading of hepatitis B virus in the body of the baby. These vaccines are quite safe and are known to produce little or no side effects in them. However, the mother should still check whether the baby is showing any signs of soreness or redness in the area where the vaccine was given. Also, the activeness of the baby should also be noted as sometimes vaccines can result in mild weakness and fatigue in babies. Very rare side effects include severe allergic reaction or pain, in which case, doctor should be consulted immediately.
