What Is Gonorrhea ?

Gonorrhea is sexually transmitted disease which affects 600,000 people every year in the United States. Gonorrhea is also called the clap. If it is not treated, it can lead to many other diseases, which also include scarring of the fallopian tubes, ectopic pregnancy, PID and endometriosis.

The bacterium known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes gonorrhea, which affects many parts of the body. Both the sexes are at risk of getting infected. Even the fetus in a mother's womb can get infected if the mother has the infection.

If you do not use the protection when having sex, it leads to infections like gonorrhea. But it is not the only way gonorrhea is transmitted. The vagina and penis are affected with gonorrhea during sexual intercourse, but it can also spread via mutual masturbation and oral sex. Gonorrhea can also infect the eyes, anus and throat. The bacterium proliferates in areas which are moist in the body.

If gonorrhea affects your throat, the symptoms are fever, sores in the mouth, aches and chills. If the eyes are infected, you will get pink eye. If the vagina is infected, it causes itchiness in pubic area, especially the skin around vagina. It also causes irritation in cervix, and sometimes, one can experience abnormal bleeding and burning sensation when urinating.

If the men are infected, the symptoms usually go unnoticed because only twenty percent of infected males display symptoms. Gonorrhea in mean causes irritation in the urethra. It also causes redness on the penis. The groin glands tend to swell and there is a tendency of urinating often.
