Differences Between Chlamydia And Gonorrhea

It is not easy to know the differences between Chlamydia and gonorrhea as the symptoms of both these sexually transmitted diseases are almost the same. Most of the women and men suffering from gonorrhea are invariably also infected with Chlamydia.

However, here are some differences between Chlamydia and gonorrhea that will help you distinguish the two diseases.

Chlamydia is sexually transmitted disease. It is caused due to Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium. It has an effect on the reproductive system of women. Although it is not a life threatening disease, if it not cured, it has serious affects on the fertility in women. A man who is infected will get a discharge from penis. Usually Chlamydia is transmitted from infected men to women.

Gonorrhea is also a sexually transmitted disease. Gonorrhea is a disease which is caused due to a bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This bacterium has the tendency of growing in warm and moist areas in the reproductive tract, which includes cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes in case of women; and in both men and women urethra is affected. This bacterium has the tendency to grow in throat, anus, eyes and mouth.

A woman infected with Chlamydia mostly does not notice the symptoms of the infection, nearly half of the men infected do not have any symptoms. If symptoms appear, they can be noticed in one to three weeks after a person is infected.

Men who are infected with gonorrhea mostly do not have any symptoms, though some can notice the symptoms in 2 to 5 days after they are infected.

The bacterium which causes Chlamydia first has an effect on the urethra and cervix of women. Women can notice symptoms like abnormal vaginal discharge or they experience burning sensation during urination. Even when it infects the fallopian tubes, symptoms cannot be noticed in some women. Some experience pain in the lower abdomen, nausea, fever, lower back pain, pain during sexual intercourse and bleeding between menstrual periods.
