Curing Genetic Disorders

If you or your family member is suffering from a genetic disorder, then you should be looking at gene therapy.

While most genetic disorders cannot be cured, gene therapy is a ray of hope for many. Treatment with gene therapy is the treatment of various diseases by single method. Also, some of the hereditary diseases like hemophilia, color blindness and cystic fibrosis can also be cured with the help of this method. Not only this, diseases like AIDS and cancer can also be prevented with the gene therapy.

This is possible due to the fact that the therapy can make desirable changes in the structure, composition and location of the gene.

While discussing about the drawbacks of this therapy, the risk involved in treatment of children tops the list. Due to the seriousness and complexity of the disease, only few children have been introduced to gene therapy trials. Scientists and researchers believe that it will work as a replacement for other therapies.

Gene therapy is comparatively a lengthy process. It takes years to cure the patient. Clinical trials are performed with patients, which sometimes take 2 to 4 years. The treatment has to undergo several steps of research before it can be offered to people.

The FDA, or Food and Drug Administration, in the US has yet to approve gene therapy for it to be available to more number of people from all walks of life. There is an expectation among researchers and doctors that the therapy will be approved by the FDA in the next few years.

Cystic fibrosis is the major disease which created the urgency to conduct clinical trials of gene therapy in children. Another genetic disorder that is being viewed for future treatment using gene therapy is ADA or adenosine deaminase. This is an immunodeficiency disorder

It is obvious that gene therapy involves certain risks as well as some limitations. Displacement of gene on DNA can cause mutation as well as cancer. Genes can also be overexposed, which can result the exposure of certain character. Defining the gene or set of genes that is responsible for the disease is another factor. That is why the Human Genome Project is being hailed as revolutionary. It will help to identify the various genes, their working, mutations and diseases caused by damaged genes. This will help gene therapy tremendously in curing genetic diseases, even if these are limited number of diseases.

Female-Genetic-Disorders      A negative change in composition and location of genes causes a genetic disorder. The change in structure gives rise to a different form of gene, which is known as variation. Similarly, any alteration is termed as mutation. Mutation causes disease like cancer. Occurrence of mutation depends upon behavioral and environmental factors. Cigarette smoking is one of the major reasons. More..
