Fibromyalgia is a non-specific disorder, characterized by various prominent symptoms, such as disturbed sleeping patterns, unreasonable fatigue and exhaustion, a general feeling of restlessness, persistent pain and frequent stiffness in the musculoskeletal system, stress, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, brain fog, and temporary amnesia. These are the early symptoms of the disease, which if ignored, can lead to several other severe symptoms that cannot be cured at later stages.
All these body-wide signs and symptoms cause general discomfort to the patient. Fibromyalgia, a rare disease with only 2 percent incidence in the human population, is often called the ‘chronic pain disorder’ to signify the excruciating pain that the patient experiences. The pain and other symptoms get further aggravated by malfunctioning of the various nervous system mechanisms that process pain in a healthy individual.
Radiating pain and restricted movement in this disorder is mainly due to the firm knots that start building up in the patient’s muscles. The ‘myofascial trigger points’ are the main tender points in the patient and it is this symptom that helps the doctors distinguish fibromyalgia from other similar disorders. Unfortunately, majority of the fibromyalgia symptoms are unpredictable and have no definite cure till date.
The most common symptoms of fibromyalgia are as follows:
Some people suffering from fibromyalgia also experience increased sensitiveness to light, sound, foods, and medicines, chest pain, dizziness, palpitations, numbness, premenstrual syndrome, profuse sweating, and difficulty in breathing. Fibromyalgia symptoms must not be confused with that of chronic fatigue syndrome.
