Flu And Fever Symptoms

In the US, each year between 25 million and 50 million people get the flu. The most common symptoms of flu are fever, runny nose, headache and cough. The runny nose is more commonly seen in kids rather than adults. Usually, the symptoms go away after a few days with ample bed rest and drinking lots of water. The cough may persist for a few more days or couple of weeks. But, at times, the symptoms can be severe. In such a case the person should get treated after consulting a doctor.

Usually, flu brings on a dry cough and this cough occurs due to the virus irritating the lining of the lungs. The cough will be recurrent and this could cause pain and discomfort in the throat as well as the chest. If the person coughs up mucus, then he or she should visit a doctor as this congested cough could be a sign of secondary infection like pneumonia.

However, fever symptoms of flu are the most worry for people. Nearly eighty percent of people who get flu end up with fever. This is nothing but the body's response to the virus. The fever makes the temperature of the body high and creates an unappealing environment for the virus. Usually, a person will have a fever more than 100 deg. Fahrenheit, but it gets okay after three to four days. Besides the fever, the person may also suffer from body ache, chills, and sweating. If the fever does not subside after three to four days, or the fever increases, then the person should consult a doctor immediately.

People suffering from flu complain of headaches for one to four days after getting exposed to the flu-causing virus. The headache can cause a lot of discomfort to the person, but invariably it can persist until the infection lasts. Due to the headache, the person will not be able to focus on work or school, and will also be highly sensitive to loud noises. Usually, to combat headaches, acetaminophen is recommended which is available over-the-counter.

It is important that parents know that aspirin should not be given to kids for flu fever, body aches and headaches as it can result in Reye's syndrome. Also, if the symptoms of flu are extreme, the doctor will recommend an anti-viral to help shorten the duration of the flu. However, the anti-viral has to be taken within 12 to 48 hours of the initial symptoms.

History Of Yellow Fever Vaccine      As the nineteenth century came to a close, yellow fever had already established itself as a dreaded disease in the Western hemisphere and the coastal parts of West Africa. There was no known treatment for yellow fever during that time. The only thing that doctors knew that outbreaks used to occur when ships anchored in ports, and those who recovered from the fever acquired immunity to subsequent outbreaks. More..
