A spell of fainting often strikes the individual all of a sudden. The fundamental reason behind passing out is known to be the insufficient supply of blood to the brain. The episode lasts for a very short while, since falling down renders the person in a better posture to regain adequate supply of oxygen.
Lying flat ensures that the heart and the head are at the same level in the body. This posture aids in the smooth flow of blood to the brain. Fainting can be prevented either by eating the required diet that helps in maintaining one’s blood pressure or taking necessary measures on receiving the first few signals of fainting to avoid the actual episode.
People susceptible to fainting should consume high quantity of salt in their diet, eat 5 to 6 small meals during the day and drink lots of water. These steps will help to maintain one’s blood pressure and sugar level. High intake of fluids will prevent dehydration. Also, such people should be well aware of certain steps of prevention. The moment one starts feeling dizzy or receives some other indication of an oncoming fainting spell, the individual should either lie down with legs raised higher than the rest of the body or put the head between the legs. This posture should be maintained till one feels completely fine again. Trying to stand up too early can result in fainting once again.
A well informed person can also be of help to a person fainting. In such cases, apart from maintaining the body postures as mentioned above, one should turn the individual’s head to one side to avoid choking. Other steps that can be taken include loosening clothes especially around the neck, and putting a cold and wet cloth on the face or neck, or covering the person with a blanket as per the body temperature requirement. Immediate medical attention may be required in cases of arrhythmia of the heart, pain in the chest, shortness of breath, blurred vision, confusion, trouble in talking, convulsions, extended period of unconsciousness and pregnancy.
