There are many people who have had several incidents of fainting, while some may have never experienced even a single one in their entire lifetime. For those who are susceptible to the underlying causes triggering the condition, the episodes of fainting could commence very early in life as a teenager and thereafter continue forever.
There are a series of events that take place during an episode of fainting. It begins with the feeling of hot or cold flushes, followed by weakness in the limbs and body as a whole and eventually the complete loss of consciousness. If one is standing, then fainting will result in a fall, which can cause injury as well. The episode lasts for a few seconds or minutes and soon the victim feels healthy again. Avoiding overcrowding and providing water can help the victim feel better.
The basic reason behind fainting, medically termed as syncope, is dearth of blood supply to the brain. One condition that could lead to this insufficient blood supply is a hyper vagus nerve. The vagus nerve serves as a link between the brain and the digestive tract, and it is responsible for blood supply to the gut. Its main function involves moving blood towards the stomach and intestines from the other tissues of the body, brain inclusive. At times, the nerve may extract excessive amount of blood from the brain resulting in fainting. Certain body situations such as posture maintained during the bowel movement, vomiting and any other conditions that initiate a decrease in blood pressure can cause such reactions in the normal functioning of the vagus nerve.
Psychological causes that can illicit the stimulation of the vagus nerve includes circumstances of extreme stress and sudden shock.
Fainting can be caused due to an increased or decreased heart rate as well. It can also be a consequence of alcoholism or intake of wrong medication. However, such forms of unconsciousness cannot be slotted as a fainting episode in the true sense.
