A blackout is characterized by sudden feeling of dizziness that results in unconsciousness and fainting. The incident lasts for a short time span, ranging from seconds to minutes. On revival, the person concerned has no clue about the time lapsed during the blackout. There are various body changes that could result in a blackout.

If it is a stray episode that never recurs in one's lifetime, then it may be taken lightly and forgotten. However, if one experiences the same quite often, then this should be taken as an indication towards a serious problem. In such cases, it is advisable to seek medical assistance and investigate the plausible causes related to the blackouts.

One of the causes of a blackout can be problems linked to the heart such as a cardiac arrest or stroke. It may also be related to the brain. Some of the factors concerning the brain that can trigger blackouts include insufficient blood supply to the brain, epilepsy, hypoxia, cerebral hemorrhage, arrhythmia and any injury to the head.

Excessive degree of physical stress and/or emotional stress can also serve as a trigger to this medical condition. Also, conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, mental fatigue, and depression can be possible reasons for blackouts.

Apart from these physical and psychological reasons, one's lifestyle could also lead to episodes of blackout. People who consume high quantity of alcohol are extremely susceptible to this condition. Alcoholism results in lowered sugar level in the blood and dehydration, both of which can lead to unconsciousness and fainting. People who work in areas wherein inhalation of toxin fumes is a probability may also experience blackouts. Lastly, consumption of wrong medication or an overdose of any medicine can also cause blackouts. The reasons could be plenty but if the situation seems repetitive, then it certainly calls for thorough medical investigation.
