Can Panic Attacks Cause Fainting ?

There are certainly a fair number of people who may have fallen unconscious during a panic attack. Nevertheless, episodes of fainting due to a panic attack are not very common. In many cases, fainting could occur not as a body reaction to the attack but because the patient psyches himself or herself with the fear of what might happen if he or she faints, especially while driving or walking alone.

Such people fear fainting to the level that their panic linked to the thought process actually brings it upon them. The thought makes them anxious and this causes rapid breathing. Rapid breathing mechanism results in the process of hyperventilation, which is characterized by inhaling excessive amounts of oxygen and the subsequent decrease in the level of carbon dioxide in the blood. This decreased level of carbon dioxide in the body finally leads to fainting. Over a period of time, this chain reaction can be controlled by consciously working on one’s pattern of breathing in a state of panic. The level of carbon dioxide can be maintained in the lungs by either breathing into a paper bag or one's hands.

Another trigger for fainting due to panic attacks is known as Vasovagal Syncope. This condition is illustrated by phobia caused due to blood or injury. An individual prone to phobia of this kind, when subjected to circumstances of exposure to blood or injury panics severely. In fact, some people panic at the mere sight of blood or injury. This entire reaction forces them to unconsciously inhibit their normal breathing pattern, thereby resulting in decreased or no intake of oxygen which leads to fainting. The only way out is to stay away from the triggers of one’s phobia and avoid panic and fainting. Fainting is a mechanism that indicates occurrence of major physical changes in the body. Therefore, it would be wise to get the valid investigations conducted in cases of recurring episodes of fainting.
