According to the studies and researches, the number of people affected with eye disease will be doubled in next three decades.
If the proper treatment is not provided, the huge figure of blind or visually impaired people will increase from 3.4 to 5.5 million by 2020. This only includes the Americans, who are 40 or older than that.According to the NEI, or National Eye Institute, the US alone spends 68 billion dollars annually to treat various eye diseases.
Cataracts are the most common disease, which cause the blindness. Estimation states that 20.5 million people in the US, 17.2 percent, are affected with cataract in both the eyes. All these people are believed to be above the age of 40.
Around 6.1 million, or 5.1 percent, Americans have undergone cataract surgery to rectify the problem
Studies show that around 30.1 million Americans will be affected with cataracts by 2020.
Diabetes and diabetic retinopathy also covers a large number of the American population.
According to American Diabetes Association, in 2007, around 20.8 million Americans were affected by diabetes. This figure is 7 percent of the total population. Diabetes has been detected in approximately 14.6 million of the total population. 6.2 million, or 30 percent, people are not aware that they are affected by diabetes.
Diabetic retinopathy adds 12,000 to 24,000 new patients every year. Approximately, 4.1 million people in the US are affected by diabetic retinopathy, which occurs due to underlying diabetes. Out of this, around 900,000 people may have vision loss. Early detection of the disease and treatment at the right time can help in reducing the possibility of blindness.
