Glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and cataracts are very common in people above 40 years of age.After 40, every one is suggested to get his or her eye examined every two or three years. Since most of the eye disorders do not have very distinct symptoms in the early stages, eye checkups are very necessary so that the disease can be diagnosed and treated if it is present.

Smoking is a risk factor for eye diseases. It increases the possibility of glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

One of the best ways to keep the eyes healthy is to exercise regularly and eat fresh and balanced diet. Meals rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin E and beta-carotene are very useful for eyes. Green leafy vegetables are the best. Exercise keeps the body healthy and strong, and prevents the diseases like diabetes, which can lead to different types of eye disease.

Eyes should always be protected from the sun. The direct and intense rays, like ultraviolet rays, are associated with cataracts and macular degeneration. In order to protect the eyes, sunglasses and hats may be very useful. A direct exposure of the eyes to the sun must be avoided.
