Eye Diseases That Cause Blindness

There are various eye diseases with a number of symptoms like black spots in the vision, loss of the vision in any or in both the eyes, and zigzag views.

These are the major symptoms which indicate the presence of eye diseases.Following are some eye diseases, which cause the blindness if proper treatment is not provided on time:

Cataract is one of the most frequent diseases. The US alone performs more than one million cataract operations each year. The disease is treated with surgery. Although the possibility of success is high, lack of advance technology gives rise to blindness caused by cataract. A large figure of 16 million people comes under this category.

AMD or age-related macular degeneration comes next. Due to the macula central vision is possible. The lost vision caused by this disease cannot be gained. However, the early diagnosis and laser surgery can control the progress of the disease. AMD is very common in people over 65 years of age. Approximately 8 million people around the world are blind due to this disease.

Glaucoma occurs when the fluid pressure increases within the eye. This pressure damages the optic nerve, which causes loss of vision and ultimately leads to blindness. Surgery and eye drops to reduce pressure are better options of treatment in the early stage.

Diabetic Retinopathy is caused by diabetes. Laser surgery, with maintenance of blood glucose level is the treatment options.

Retinitis pigmentosa occurs very rarely, and is a slow progressing disease that usually begins in early childhood. It is known to damage the retina gradually.

Optic nerve hypoplasia, retinopathy of prematurity, neurological visual impairment, and ocular albinism are few of the eye diseases that cause blindness.
