Eye disease is very common in newborns. However, it is not often a serious problem. These diseases often occur due to the infection in eyes.
Some of the eye diseases in newborns are described below:

When a swollen pimple-like structure appears on the eyelid, in general it is an indication for a stye or chalazion. Stye is comparatively redder. In both, stye and chalazion, inflammation of the oil glands occur inside the eyelid.
The warm and wet towel can be used to apply over the swellings. For a stye, antibiotics can be used, while a chalazion can be to excised.
Amblyopia is a comparatively more serious disease. This is also known as lazy eye. In this, one eye becomes weaker than the other. As a result, the stronger eye is used more, and the images coming from the weaker one is ignored by the brain, which ultimately results in dysfunctioning of the weaker eye. While treating the patient, the weaker eye is stressed by wearing patches on the stronger eye. This let the weaker one to become stronger.
Strabismus is characterized by misaligned eyes. This disorder is popularly known as cross-eyed or walleyed. The newborns become unable to concentrate on a particular point. This disease is cured automatically within 4 months of birth. Sometimes, surgery may be required. In general, use of glass and eye exercises are suggested.
When the cornea of a child is scratched, a corneal abrasion occurs. The child can rub the eyes and can make scratches with nails of the finger. This result in severe pain as well as the eye becomes very sensitive to the light. Using special antibiotic eye drops helps to cure this eye ailment in newborns.
