Diabetes, or blood sugar, is known to cause eye diseases.
Diabetic retinopathy is the main disease, which is caused by diabetes. In fact, diabetic retinopathy is actually one of the symptoms of diabetes. This eye disease can make the person blind if the proper treatment at proper time is not provided.Approximately 35 percent of people have this disease, which increases with increase in age. As a result, the loss of vision occurs gradually which ultimately leads to the blindness.
Optic neuropathy is also caused by diabetes. This finally decreases the ability to view and recognize the objects or person. Headache and nausea come under main symptoms.
Also, oculomotor nerve, trochlear nerve and abducens nerve lesions can be caused by diabetes. Headache and nausea are the major symptoms.
Some diabetic patients, who possess low resistance, suffer from swollen eyelid, sty and blepharitis. High incidence of pyogenic infections is one of the major causes. Yellow tumor occurs inside the upper eyelid, and the skin turns yellow and full of spots.
Bulbar conjunctiva is also a common disease caused by diabetes. In this, irregular cord-like blood vessels are observed. The diameter of the blood vessels is not equal. Sometimes, these blood vessels are damaged. This results in bleeding and results in the reddening of the conjunctiva. Along with the diabetic patients, old aged people also are prone to the disease. However, these non diabetic patients do not require any special treatment. The healthy state of eyes is restored with proper treatment after few days.
