PremPro is a popular drug made of a unique combination of medroxyprogesterone and conjugated estrogens. Both these compounds are female hormones and are necessary in regulating menstruation and ovulation in women. Therefore, the drug PremPro is widely recommended to treat vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, vaginal irritation, and hot flashes.
However, this medicine should be administered under strict medical supervision as irregular use or overdose can lead to heart attack or dementia. Also, the drug must not be used in case of vaginal bleeding, pregnancy, stroke, and breast and uterine cancers.
According to a recent research, overdose of PremPro can lead to severe diarrhea, gastrointestinal problems, and swelling in the stomach and intestines. Recently, a study was conducted to understand the relation between diarrhea and PremPro and it was revealed that out of a total of over 29,000 patients, who exhibited PremPro side effects, 131 patients (0.45 percent) reported to have diarrhea. This is a clear evidence of the fact that diarrhea is one among the many side-effects of PremPro administration and cannot be ignored. If the trend of occurrence of diarrhea in studied in PremPro reports of these 131 patients, it will be clear that since 2003, there has not been a significant change in number of patients who suffer from diarrhea due to intake of PremPro.
Also, it was observed that nearly 50 percent of the patients got severe diarrhea after regular usage of PremPro for 2-5 years. Nearly 46 percent patients got it after 5 years of regular usage of this drug, while merely 4 percent of the patients got it after 1-2 yrs of regular intake of PremPro.
Quite interestingly, only women have shown to get diarrhea on long-term use of PremPro. None of the male patients reported to have this kind of a problem. Most of the women who suffered from diarrhea due to prolonged use of the drug were 50-59 years of age. Very few of them were below the age of 50 years, while none of them were below the age of 40 years.
