Diarrhea is a condition when a person passes loose and watery stools. In such a condition a person passes stools more than thrice a day. Acute diarrhea lasts for around two days and does not need any special treatment as it gets treated on its own whereas prolonged diarrhea persists for much longer time as compared to acute one and may even result in dehydration. This kind of diarrhea must not be ignored and a physician must be consulted soon.
As far as the causes of diarrhea are concerned, acute diarrhea usually results from some viral, bacterial or parasitic infection while on the other hand a chronic diarrhea is associated with functional disorders like irritable bowel syndromes as well as inflammatory bowel disorders.
