The American Diabetes Association says that over twenty-three million people in the United States have diabetes. Around 57 million people exhibit prediabetes symptoms. Diabetes is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to process the sugars and absorb into the blood stream. Untreated form of diabetes can lead to several health complications. The only way to test for diabetes is by reading the blood sugar levels through a blood test. However, a person should also have knowledge as to what is considered as high blood sugar levels.
Over time you consume some kind of food or beverage they are broken down into sugars by the body and glucose is passed on to the blood stream. The pancreas releases a hormone known as insulin that delivers the glucose to the blood cells. When the pancreas does not release insulin, the glucose is not absorbed into the blood cells and they remain in the blood causing a high blood sugar level. In a normal person the more the sugars are found in the blood stream, more insulin is released. In a diabetic patient, there is no insulin production leading to the condition.
However, there are several reasons why blood sugar levels spike up in the body. One of the main reasons is pancreases producing an inadequate amount of insulin. Lack of insulin cannot combat the spike of glucose in the blood stream, leading to the excess. A diet that is rich in sugars and carbohydrates causes the pancreas to release excessive insulin which is another problem. Excess insulin causes the cells to raise a resistance in absorption of glucose. There could be several other side effects because of this. A blood test measures the blood sugar levels in different situations, like fasting sugar, and sugar after consuming food.
A fasting blood sugar test is taken to determine if the person has diabetes. If you are checking for diabetes, this would be the first test you go through early in the morning and on an empty stomach. This test is done to determine if there is any blood glucose lingering after the recent meal you have had. As per the National Diabetes Clearinghouse, any blood sugar level that measures more than 125mg/dl indicates a condition called diabetes. Diabetes has to be treated immediately on realization.
Blood glucose is also measured after consuming meals. A blood test will immediately reveal if your body is working towards the consumption of the glucose in the blood stream. The reading is taken 2 hours after you have consumed. Sometimes clinical tests also ask you to drink a sugar solution with 75g of sugar in it.
