Damage From High Blood Sugar

Sugar is a source of energy for the body. However, when insulin is not secreted by the pancreas, or the amount secreted is too little, then the amount of sugar circulating in the bloodstream increases. Unfortunately, having high levels of blood sugar is not good, as it can wreak havoc in the body. Some of the damage from high blood sugar is listed below.

If the blood sugar is high in the body, it can end up damaging the nerves. When the amount of blood sugar is high, it results in high amount of fat in the blood. The combined effect of the sugar and fat ends up damaging the nerves. While researchers are still trying to find out the actual procedure how high blood sugar damages the nerves, it is for certain that most of the damage occurs because the nerve cells do not get the required amount of energy to work properly. Some of the symptoms of nerve damage include tingling sensation, numbness, feeling dizzy, problems with digestion, problems association with urination, erectile dysfunction, pain and weakness.

High blood sugar can also damage blood vessels. When this happens, blood vessels' walls become rigid and hard and this hinders the smooth flow of blood. Furthermore, where ever the walls are damaged, fat deposits, known as plaque, get accumulated which further hinder the smooth flow of blood. This can also affect blood pressure and this, in turn, can adversely affect the kidneys and heart.

When the blood vessels hardened due to high sugar levels, it also has an adverse effect on the heart. As the blood does not flow smoothly, the heart has to work harder to ensure that blood reaches all the parts of the body. Furthermore, the blood vessels entering into the heart get damaged, it increases the chances of getting coronary artery disease (CAD). In fact, CAD causes pain in the chest, which is referred to as angina, and can increases the chances of a heart attack. It has been seen that people who have high blood sugar are two times more at risk of developing heart ailments, as per the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse.

People with high blood sugar are also likely to suffer from kidney failure, according to National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse. Kidneys are responsible for filtering toxins, waste and excess water from the body and this is eliminated through urine. When blood sugar is constantly high, it adversely affects blood vessels that feed the kidneys. As a result, these blood vessels begin leaking proteins into the urine, leading to a condition known as proteinuria. When kidneys are affected, it results in heart problems and elevated blood pressure.

Hence, having high blood sugar is detrimental to health, as all major organs in the body are adversely affected.
