Can Fruit Cause High Blood Sugar ?

Fruits contain high levels of sugar, water and carbohydrates. They are ranked low on the glycemic index (GI) compared to other actual foods but they can cause an instant spike in the blood sugar levels. There are fruits, like dates and watermelons, which release a steady amount of sugar into the blood stream in a consistent fashion. However, people with preconditions like diabetes should be extra careful and ask their dietician on how much and what kinds of fruit they should have. Sugar and starchy foods can cause an instant spike n the blood sugar levels.

 

When you consume fruits, because of their high water content, the digestive system starts breaking down the foods immediately. It is converted into glucose which provides energy to the body. Carbohydrates are the main ingredients that cause instant rise in blood sugar levels. Other ingredient like the amounts of fructose, minerals and fiber influence the absorption of sugars into the body. As per the American Association of Diabetes, there are several fruits that are low in the glycemic index and are good for diabetic patients.

The glycemic index is used to prescribe the food for diabetic patients. It is a ranking system which rates food and drinks which are high in sugars and carbohydrates and can cause an instant spike in the blood sugar. Fruits like cranberries, dates, watermelon and pineapples have a higher GI index, which means it spikes the blood sugar levels immediately. Fruits and vegetables that is low on the index usually because a low spike in the blood sugar level as they are absorbed consistently into the blood stream.

The Harvard Medical School says that dried dates tend to rate the highest in the glycemic index. They are ranked at 103. Apples, peaches, oranges and bananas also have higher ratings on the glycemic index. Some of the fruits that are lowly ranked on the index are grapefruits at 25, prunes at 29, and pears with a GI of 38. If you would like to prevent a sudden spike in the blood sugar level, you should consume fruits and food items that are not ranked high on the index. Such fruits and food items ensure that steady supply of glucose enters the bloodstream without causing a surge in the blood sugar. Hence, these food items and fruits considered to be beneficial for diabetic patient.

Consuming too many fruits which rank high in the index can cause a sudden spike in the blood sugar, and they are not safe for people with diabetes.
