Degenerative Muscle Diseases

The degenerative muscular diseases, also known as myopathies, result in making the skeletal muscles weak.

Usually the myopathies are degenerative in nature, but they can also be caused due to side effects of certain drugs, chemical poisoning and chronic disorders afflicting the immune system.

Some of the degenerative muscle diseases are as follows:

Fibromyalgia is one of the degenerative muscle diseases. The features of this disease include pain and fatigue. It is actually a genetic syndrome. Women between 20 and 50 are most prone to it. In general, 3 percent to 10 percent of the population exhibits this disease.

Another one is muscular dystrophy or MD. The body muscles become very weak due to the disease. Break down of the muscles occurs, which results in deposit of fat materials. Muscular dystrophy is usually genetic in nature and causes wasting of the muscles.

Dermatomyositis is a type of inflammatory muscle disease affecting a group of muscles. This disorder is more common in women. However, any person can get affected with this.

As a result of polymyositis, degenerative and inflammatory changes in the muscles occur. This causes weakness in muscles and the muscles also tend to atrophy. Although it affects all the age groups, it usually manifests during middle childhood or when the person reaches his or her twenties. Also, the disease is more common in women than men.

Breakdown of muscle fibers results in rhabdomyolysis. The muscle fibers start flowing with the blood circulation. Over a period of the time, the broken down muscle fibers reach the kidneys causing damage to them.

Myocarditis occurs with the degeneration and inflammation of the heart muscle. This degenerative disease can be caused due to an infection by bacteria or a virus. Age also determines the possibility of the disease. Treatment for myocarditis has not been developed yet. So, just the symptoms of the disease can be alleviated.

Nerves disease can also cause the degenerative muscle diseases. Polio and spinal cord injuries are few of the examples.
