Degenerative Brain Diseases

In 1907, a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist introduced the term degenerative brain disease for the first time.

Under the umbrella of degenerative brain diseases several diseases are covered, like Alzheimer's disease, senility and dementia to name a few.The US alone has more than 1.5 million people affected from the Alzheimer`s disease, which is a type of degenerative bone disease. Occurrence of the disease depends upon the socio-economic environment and the status of the people. People over 40 years of age are most prone to the disease. However, a patient as young as 28 years has also been been reported to have Alzheimer's disease. Studies reveal that this comes under top 4 leading diseases, which cause death. In U.S., around 100 thousand people die each year. First, a 65 years old patient was examined, who was affected with the disease. This is the reason it was known as pre-senile dementia.

People think that the disease occurs due to aging, which results brain vessel sclerosis. This is actually a wrong perception. The major reason is degeneration of nerve cells.

Different persons and stages possess different characteristics. Cognition disintegration, thought disorder, communication disorder, and disorientation in time and space are some of the major symptoms. The patient is unable to perform daily living activities as a result. Usually degenerative brain diseases are progressive in nature.

The accurate test to diagnose the disorder has not been developed. The altered outer layer of the brain and hippocampus help in diagnosis of the Alzheimer's disease. After taking a microscopic view, neurofibrillar tangles and neuritic plaques are found in the brain regions. Also, plaques show the extracellular deposits of compounds containing protein and carbohydrate. Thus, as the number of plaques increases, the possibility of the disorder also increases.
