Cholera is a disease which has killed thousands of people when it first broke out. Unfortunately, even today thousands of people all over the world die due to this disease. Although in the initial stages, cholera is not that deadly if proper treatment is given, it can cause fatalities when treatment is not rendered. So, here are some precautions to be taken to avoid cholera.
The water you drink should be boiled, treated or sterilized. Tea and coffee made from boiled water and the bottled drinks which are not contaminated should be only consumed. Milk, which is unpasteurized, should be boiled before you drink it. Do not put ice cubes into your glass unless you are confident that they are made of good water, and it is better to avoid ice creams. Food must be cooked properly and it should remain hot when you eat. Do not eat shellfish and raw fish. Do not eat raw fruits and raw vegetables. It is better to avoid the food which is sold in the street stalls, and if you have to eat, make sure that it is safe to eat.
These precautions will make sure that you are not affected with cholera and they also protect you from getting affected by other bacteria which cause diarrhea. Sometimes some kind of bacteria produces toxins which cannot be destroyed even after boiling.
A person can also get vaccinated with Dukoral, which is an oral vaccine to prevent cholera. But it does not give you hundred percent guarantee of avoiding this disease. Even though you are vaccinated, you have to take all the above mentioned precautions to avoid cholera.
