Vibrio cholerae is the bacteria which causes cholera. This disease damages the gastrointestinal system. Cholera causes vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration. If it is not treated, it can kill a person. As the person loses body fluids, he or she ends up becoming and appearing weak.

Cholera is an enteric disease. It has symptoms like watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, stool containing blood or pus, weight loss, dehydration and loss of appetite. The symptoms show up in hours or days.

There are many diseases similar to cholera and they are all enteric diseases with more less the similar symptoms. Usually the symptoms of enteric diseases remain for a period of 8 days. In case a person has one of the enteric diseases, he will be examined and interviewed by the doctor for diagnosis. The doctor can order for tests like blood tests, stool cultures, endoscopy, X-ray, CT scans or MRI.

Children who are suffering from E.coli 0157:H7 disease, suffer from complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome which causes failure of kidney. The C. difficile disease symptoms can be treated using probiotics and antibiotics. The enteric diseases which are caused due to virus or parasite can be treated with good nutrition, rehydration and rest.

You can prevent suffering from an enteric disease by taking antibiotics which are prescribed by the doctor. Wash your hands thoroughly after you use the restroom, when you change the diaper, when preparing lunch and after handling animals. Meat and the poultry should be cooked thoroughly. Do not drink juices and dairy without pasteurization.

The diseases which are similar to cholera are Campylobacteriosis, Cryptosporidiosis, Escherichia Coli, Giardiasis, Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), Norovirus, Salmonellosis, Shigellosis and Yersiniosis.
