Cholera is a diarrheal illness which is caused due to the intestines getting infected with vibrio cholerae bacterium. It may be severe sometimes, but most of the times it is mild. You can notice the symptoms one to three days after you get infected by the bacterium. It starts off with mild and uncomplicated diarrhea, but can turn severe if appropriate measures are not taken.
Some of the people who are infected do not have any symptoms. The common symptoms of this infection are dehydration, cramps in the abdomen, diarrhea with a fishy smell, dry skin, dry mouth, leg cramps, feeling thirsty excessively, low urine output, low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, nausea, vomiting, sunken eyes, tiredness, and unusual sleepiness.
The person, who is infected with cholera, has heavy loss of body fluids, and it is this causes dehydration and may lead to shock. If the dehydration is not tackled and treated, it can be fatal.
The diagnosis of cholera can be made by taking a sample of the stool and checking it for the bacterium. Cholera can be treated easily by replacement of electrolytes and water that the body loses due to extreme diarrhea. Also, antibiotics can be used to cure cholera. If you are giving treatment or taking care of person affected by cholera, clean and sterilize yourself thoroughly. Eat food which is hygienic and cooked properly and also drink boiled water. The water should be purified without fail, and human excreta should be disposed properly and hygienically.
