While many people get cold sores and canker sores, there is a difference between them. In fact, many people tend to use cold sore and canker sore inter-changeably, but both these conditions are completely different from one another. (See Reference 1)
A canker sore is an ulcer in the mouth that is quite painful. It usually develops on the inside of the cheeks, lips or the tongue. It is possible to have more than one sore and it tends to recur. While doctors do not know the cause for canker sores, they can result from stress; biting the lip, tongue or cheek; brushing the teeth with too much force or pressure; injury because of dental work; or just before the onset of menstruation in women. Unlike cold sores, canker sores are not contagious as cannot be passed on to another person. (See Reference 1)
Canker sores generally heal on their own accord without the use of medication, but the at times, when too many sores are present simultaneously, the doctor may prescribe an antibiotic to hasten the healing process. (See Reference 1)
On the other hand, cold sores are contagious and are caused due to herpes simplex virus Type 1. Cold sores, also called fever blisters, usually occur around the mouth, or on the lips or chin. The virus causing the sores tends to stay dormant within the skin cells and each time it gets activated, it will result in the cold sores occurring. The virus can become active due to fever, getting exposed to sun or even stress. There is no cure for cold sores, but the frequency and duration of the sores can be reduced with the help of antiviral medication. (See Reference 1)
When the cold sores are oozing, they are contagious and the infection can spread to others while kissing or touching. Hence, a person who is suffering from cold sores, should take all steps to prevent the spread of the herpes virus by adopting hygiene measures and taking steps to limit physical contact with others.
